Absences
Parents/Guardians must report all student absences to the Main Office at 773.535.8250. Upon returning to school after an absence, a student must bring a note signed by his or her parent/guardian stating the reason for the absence. Regular attendance is necessary for success in the classroom. The acceptable reasons for an excused absence are illness, death in the immediate family, family emergency, religious observance, situations beyond the control of the student as determined by the principal, and circumstances which cause reasonable concern for the safety or health of the student. CPS policy states students who have more than nine (9) days of unexcused absences may be retained at the end of the school year.

Completion of the Curriculum:
The primary factor to be considered in making promotion and graduation decisions is the student’s successful completion of the curriculum for the assigned grade. The curriculum includes reading, the other language arts, mathematics, science, social science, art, music, health and safety education, physical education, and library science. Successful completion of all of these subjects — including arts, music, and physical education, library and computer science — is important.
The report card is the most accurate reflection of the student’s successful completion of the curriculum. By successfully completing subjects, the student acquires the basic skills, develops the concepts, and completes the basic academic requirements for that grade.

Affective Strength:
Another factor in making promotion and graduation decisions is the presence of habits and attitudes that lead to success in the next grade. Included are indicators of student maturity, responsibility, work skills, study habits, attendance, and leadership as well as involvement in extracurricular activities.
The report cards reflect the student’s growth in attitudes and habits as well as academic performance.

Other Indicators:
When the report card alone is insufficient for making an unequivocal judgment about the student’s progress, other indicators of the student’s performance may be used, including teacher and principal judgment of academic achievement and potential for success in the next grade.
Scores on the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) may be used to corroborate and supplement existing information. However, decisions on promotion and graduation shall never be made solely on the basis of test scores.

Graduation Mandates
The graduating students must be successful on the tests of the constitutions of the United States and the State of Illinois (Chapter 122, Section 27-3, The School Code of Illinois).
