Word Play

Each of the following quiz questions consists of a related pair of words. Your job is to find the answer pair that BEST resembles the relationship between those words.

So, if the question says, "dog: puppy" and the possible answers are:

  • bike: tire
  • pencil: eraser
  • cat: kitten
  • cup: plate

The best answer is "cat: kitten," since both word pairs express an adult-infant relationship.

Quiz: Word Play

Pick the best related pair and brush up for the verbal section of standardized tests.

Your Vocab Secret Weapon

Learn how to break down words and figure out ones you've never seen before. What's the secret? Greek and Latin roots. Here's how they work: Think about television and telephone. They have "tele" in common-- a Latin root meaning far.

(Tele + vision = far sight; tele + phone = far sound.) Know that, and you can figure out that a telephoto lens helps you take pictures from far away.
