Legal Disclaimer
Most of our students want to do what is right most of the time, but unfortunately, some students will break a school rule. In such cases, correction is the aim. We are sure that parents want children to do what is right for their own good. In most instances, a teacher/student conference is sufficient. If it is not, a parent conference will be necessary. In certain cases, suspension from school is required.

Suspension should be regarded as a means of assisting the child in his or her growth and development. Violation of school rules and regulations, disruption of the class, truancy, tardiness, and other acts which disturb the learning environment are not acceptable student behavior. The aim is to emphasize the need to accept responsibility for one’s own acts and to give the student an opportunity to examine his or her own seriousness of purpose.

School and home are both striving for excellence. Excellence is our goal and every move we make on behalf of any pupil is made with that goal in our minds and in our hearts. Cuffe seeks to graduate future leaders. If we work together, we can do it.

Student Behavior Expectations

Every child is required to behave at school in a manner conducive to learning.

Learning cannot take place amid disorder and chaos.

Each child is responsible for his/her own behavior and must accept the consequences thereof.

Discipline problems at Cuffe Academy are approached in a variety of ways:

  ::  Phone calls from the teachers;

  ::  temporary removal from class;

  ::  parent conferences,

  ::  detentions (after school or Saturday);

  ::  or suspension, as a last resort.

Written records are kept of the student’s misbehavior.

When a child receives a discipline referral for misbehavior, he/she has an opportunity to explain his/her view of the incident.

FOOD
No gum or candy are to be brought to school.

HOMEWORK
Students in all grades will have homework assignments on a regular basis. Homework must be neatly completed on time and turned in as instructed. Parents are asked to provide a quiet time and place at home for the child to work. Approximate homework times are: primary students (15– 30 minutes per day), grades 4-6 (30 minutes—1 hour per day), grades 7-8 (45 minutes to 1 1/2 hours per day).

PLEASE NOTE:
The possession and use of cellular phones, CD players, mp3 players, portable video games and other electronic devices are strictly prohibited during school hours. Students who are found to have these items will have them taken away and a parent will have to come to the school office to pick them up.

With all the recent incidents involving CPS schools, safety is one of our top priorities. Thus, the possession of any kind of weapon or look-alike weapon on any CPS property will automatically result in a ten (10) suspension and expulsion. This is mandated in the CPS Student Code of Conduct. Parents, please discuss with your children the severity of violating this rule. We want our children to feel safe in and around our school, and not worry about any distractions interfering with their education.

CUFFE UNIFORM DRESS CODE

The L.S.C. decided to establish a Uniform Dress Code for Cuffe Academy. This means that all students with the exception of preschool, will wear the same colors to school everyday.

Cuffe recognizes the individualism of all students, however it is necessary to provide an environment conducive for learning. Students are required to be dressed in the appropriate uniform for school.

The daily, basic uniform for all Cuffe Students is:

  ::  plain white collared polo or oxford dress shirt or
       blouse (NO T-SHIRTS; also colored t-shirts are
       NOT to be worn under the uniform shirt). Shirts
       must be tucked into pants, shorts, or skirts.

  ::  navy blue pants, skirt jumper or knee-length
       shorts (during the summer months).

  ::  a white or navy blue uniform sweater.

  ::  all shirts are to be tucked in and pants should not
       sag below the waist. A belt or suspenders should
       be worn to prevent pants from sagging below the
       waist.

  ::  blue jeans, t-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, torn
       clothing, clothing that is too baggy, too tight, too
       short, too revealing, contains messages with
       profanity, drugs, alcohol, pornographic images, or
       gang symbols are NOT appropriate uniform attire
       for Cuffe students.

Uniform violations can result in a loss of privileges such as field trips and incentive activities, as well as detentions.

The council decided to establish this code to:

 ::  Promote a sense of unity among the student body.

 ::  Eliminate a need for clothing or fashion competition.

 ::  Assist in school security (by reducing the risk of students
      being identified as wearing gang colors, or of
having their
      high fashion garments
 stolen).

 :: Reduce the cost of school clothing.
